Meter & Electrical Systems Technician

Position Description
Austin Utilities is seeking a Meter & Electrical Systems Technician.  Under the supervision of the Electric Operations Supervisor, you will perform testing, maintenance, calibration, programming and installation of electric meters and related equipment.
 
Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent; and
  • Journeyman Electrician License or Line Worker’s License, or
  • Associate degree in Electrical Power Technology, Electronic Technology, or a closely related field.
  • Five (5) years of related electrical experience.  Thorough knowledge of single and three-phase electrical concepts and metering; considerable knowledge of the principles of electrical theory.
  • Class D Minnesota Driver’s license.
 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Thorough knowledge of single and three-phase electrical concepts and construction.  Considerable knowledge of the principles of electrical theory as applied to electrical circuits and wiring systems and ability to apply this knowledge to work situations.  Knowledge of substations and substation equipment.  Knowledge of single phase and polyphase metering.  Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.  Considerable knowledge of the principles of electrical theory as applied to electrical circuits and wiring systems and ability to apply this knowledge to work situations.
  • Skill (proficiency) in operation of the listed tools and equipment.  Skill in the application of first aid methods including CPR.
  • Skill (proficiency) with PC’s, technology and applications to complete job tasks – to include AMI, Customer Information System, Work Order and Inventory Management software.
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of the job, including discriminating between colors, ability to read and follow plan drawings and specifications, and ability to work under varying weather conditions.
  • Demonstrates attention to detail, customer service orientation and communication skills.
  • Personal skills include a willingness to assign a high priority to customer satisfaction, excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to work compatibly with Austin Utilities’ employees and customers, ability to perform under pressure and/or frequent interruptions and ability to work with angry or difficult customers.
  • Ability to negotiate, make decisions, and organize workloads.  Ability to maintain composure in stressful situations.  Ability to exercise good judgment in analyzing transactions.  Strong public relations skills, group skills, and communications skills.
 
Special Requirements
  • Must be willing to accept overtime assignments and work in inclement weather.
  • Submit to required pre-employment and post-accident drug, alcohol and cannabis testing.
  • Complete any required courses or training as assigned.
